Foundations are one of those products that are very personal and opinions about any particular one can be swayed by skin types. However, as a previous freelance makeup artist I can tell you there are general characteristics of any given makeup product, regardless of your skin type, that make it to “Holy Grail” status. Now below are the top five FOUNDATIONS that I tried during 2022.

Disclaimer: these were products that I bought with my own money when they launched, used on myself throughout the year and will rate them in descending order.

#5

MAKE UP FOR EVER

This foundation line in general has had many “wins” in the industry. Not only was it a must in my makeup kit back in the day but, still holds its own in a very competitive market; and for good reason. This foundation has coverage without making your face look cakey, has an insane shade range, and overall versatile in the coverage it can provide. It is a very every-day-women friendly foundation. The reason why I am placing this foundation so low in ranking is because this foundation is nothing new to me. It has always been a great foundation but, the upgraded packaging that came with the 2022 launch did not go unnoticed.

#4

NARS

Okay being 100% transparent, although the foundation itself is a very nice formula, I didn’t get into using this one a ton. Personally, I wish the finish was slightly more luminous and it was a little drying on me. Also, fun fact: I am a mom of two boy and my youngest was born August 2020. My skin type is TBA everyday because after children it wanted nothing to do with me. Sometimes I am drier than the Sahara and other times breathing brings out the oils. If you have drier skin, I think you either have to skin prep the c___ out your face and use a radiant primer or skip this and get the NARS Sheer Glow foundation.

#3

BOUNCEâ„¢ Always On Radiant Skin Tint
BEAUTY BLENDER

This little number is a raved product for a reason. That being said, I wish it was not marketed as a skin tint. This is a foundation not a sheer tint. Now, why is it labeled a skin tint and have more coverage like a foundation you may ask? Great question, let me tell you. The year 2022 was the year every company decided to market the no-makeup-makeup look which was great. The more natural approach is appreciated. BUT, the title although selling with the idea of a “tint” can be off-putting to duo market. Those is search for something more sheer, like a CC or BB clear, will feel deceived because it has a lot more coverage. And on the flip side, those looking for coverage will overlook this amazing product because they are looking for more pigment. Either way this isn’t a marketing post, I will digress. Just know, this is a real one.

Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation with Fermented Arnica
HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA

This foundation is as crazy good and the crazy long name miss Lady Gaga labeled it. If I think about my most used foundation of the year, it would likely be this one. The shade range is great although the undertones the foundation pulls can be tricky, especially for my online shopping gals/guys. Personally speaking, I am a foundation cocktail making type of gal. Have always mixed foundations to get the correct shade but, I don’t expect the average person to feel the need to have more than one foundation. These things aren’t cheap, okay! Best tip I can give you, go into Sephora and ask the sales associate for samples. Don’t be shy. They don’t offer them, you have to ask but at least you try out minimum two shades before buying. Also, take the color matching from the sales person with a grain of salt and always factor in the lighting in the store (trust me I have been there).

#1

Ambient Soft Glow Foundation
Hourglass

The beauty community owes this foundation an apology. Where were the hype-men for this one? This foundation although EXPENSIVE is a filter in a bottle. I am a huge fan of Hourglass as a whole. This is the type of brand that has a large price tag but quality to back it up. It is blurring, gives an airbrush finish to the skin, is not an overwhelming grease looking glow. It is a luxury product with a luxurious finish and feel. The down side to this foundation, again, is the $58.00 price tag associated with it but in my opinion it will last you a long time and is incredible quality.
